Hi. My Name is Nathan. I have Tourette Syndrome Plus: NeurologicallyGifted.com

Tourette Syndrome Plus Class Presentation

What you can expect from me?

  • Tourette Syndrome Plus Presentation Neurologically GiftedYou can expect me to move and make noises.  I try to hold them in but I can’t.  It is like having an itch that you want to scratch.  Eventually you have to scratch it.  Usually holding in tics makes them worse later.
  • You can expect me to do things without thinking.  I don’t mean to make you mad.  I really want to be a good friend.  I will try to remember to think first.
  • You can expect me to apologize.  If my tics bother you or I am rude, I need to apologize.  Whether I can help what I am doing or not I am responsible for my actions and behaviour.
  • You can expect me to learn more about my disorders and practice making them less disruptive to my friendships and our classroom.

How you can help?

  • Give me some extra time to think.  I might change my mind and do the right thing.
  • Give me some space when I look overwhelmed or upset.  I don’t want to react badly if I am having a hard time controlling myself.
  • Ignore my tics.  Paying attention to them makes them worse.  If you get used to them I will be more comfortable and it might even make them better by making me calmer.
  • Encourage me, especially when I am doing something that makes you feel like I am a good friend.  I don’t always know when I do good things.
  • Repeat yourself if it seems like I didn’t hear you the first time.  I may not have.  I miss a lot of cues that you all can see.
  • Learn about Tourette Syndrome and talk about it with your family.  You can ask me, my mom or my teacher about it too.  I am happy to help you understand.

  2. What a wonderful job you did on this Nathan. I am sure your information will educate many people. Not just young people, maybe even teachers and other adults that read your presentation or hear it. You are really amazing in how you are able to be so accepting and open about many involuntary conditions that you have no control over. They have just been a part of you for most of your life and you learned to live with them. They don’t define who you are, I bet you are a pretty neat guy, but you were too shy to say that!! 🙂 Some people get a blemish on their face and can’t deal with that. You have such strength. My grandson has Tourettes and some of the other conditions you mentioned. He too is strong. I will be thinking about you Nathan and believing that good things will be coming your way and your future will be bright as the most shiny light you have ever seen! Take good care and keep that chin up!!

    1. Thank you so much for your comment Loving Nana. When I shared it with Nathan I could see the pride in his face for having touched your life. He is very grateful for your comment. He really is a neat kid who has endured his challenges. You can bet I am going to be sharing your comment with him again in the years to come to remind him of his strength and positive impact on others.
